Granite, Drummond swing into new volleyball season at Tip-off Tournament
DRUMMOND - The Lady Trojans and Prospectors kicked off their 2018 Volleyball seasons Saturday in Drummond, with Granite collecting enough points to make it into the elimination bracket.
The Lady Prospectors took one on the chin in their opener, losing in straight games to Seeley Swan before rebounding to beat Lima and split with Victor. Pool play left them with 79 points and a seventh-place seed in the elimination bracket. Unfortunately they were pitted against #2 Gardiner, who beat Granite on their way to the tournament championship.
"Opening tournament is always fun, it gives you a long list of things to work on come Monday," said Lady Prospector Head Coach Jennifer Graham. "We are running a new offense, one setter instead of two and have two really big holes to fill with Jaden (Comings) and Brooke (Rouse) graduating.
"There were some moments of greatness. Emma (Grange) is quick had great hands and we have girls who have the ability to be aggressive and hit well. The girls need to play confident, they have the skills and now just need to put it together and play like a team."
On Drummond's side of the ledger, they were gifted an extra match due to Noxon becoming a no-show. And while they didn't quite qualify for the elimination bracket at the end, the Lady Trojans gained valuable experience under new Head Coach Shona Bradshaw.
Drummond split it's opening match with Lincoln (13-15, 15-5)before sweeping both against Clark Form (15-7, 15-8). Seeley proved to be too much for the Lady Trojans as well, beating the locals 15-8, 15-8. Drummond finished the day with a split against Darby at 15-10, 8-15.
"We have three returning starters and a couple with varsity experience," stated Bradshaw, "so a little young, but we are coming together nicely as a team."
