Lady Trojans ground Falcons at home
DRUMMOND – The Lady Trojans played hard in the middle two periods to pull away from the visiting Falcons and earn a 63-48 victory.
The win keeps the Lady Trojans in second place in the District 12C standings as Drummond enters the last two weeks of the regular season.
After trailing 10-9 at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Trojans used a 21-16 run over the next eight minutes to take a 30-26 halftime lead. The second quarter run was made even more impressive as senior Sophia de Santiago went down with a back injury in just 30 seconds into period. Her Drummond teammates responded with the strong effort that carried over after halftime.
The Lady Trojans repeated the feat after the break, getting de Santiago back and outscoring the Lady Falcons 19-10 in the third and taking a lead they would never relinquish.
“I really liked how the girls worked together in the second half,” reflected Lady Trojan Head Coach Nate Bignell. “We need to keep building on that as a team and keep pushing ourselves forward.”
If ever a team wanted a balanced scoring attack, Drummond had it in Saturday’s win. Sydney Phillips led the Lady Trojans with 15 points followed by Sara Kielley at 13. Rylee Hilmo scored nine, Holly Hauptman had eight and Hannah Bradshaw and Donna Seekell each chipped in seven.
Drummond will be off until Friday, Feb. 1 when they host Sheridan. Their final two games of the season will be Feb. 8, when Ennis comes to town for the Lady Trojan Senior Night, and Feb. 9 when they close out the season in Lima.

The way he was shooting, Falcons’ junior Jake Hughes could have called this one in from Twin Bridges. Hughes hit seven three-pointers in the first half to lead the visiting Falcons to a 69-48 win over the Trojans Saturday night in Drummond.
The win keeps Twin Bridges undefeated and atop the District 12C standings. Drummond remains in fourth, setting up what could be another semifinal rematch between the two teams come tourney time.
“I’m gonna have to go back and study our game film and see where we’re missing on defense,” said Drummond Head Coach Levi Parsons. “They’re getting us over-extended and unable to recover. I know with the one kid (Hughes) we tried to adjust and have someone know where he was all the time.”
Despite their best efforts, Drummond was unable to stop the long-range assault used by the Falcons. After rotating the ball to one corner, a quick skip pass would sail across the floor to Hughes or one of his teammates for an open shot beyond the arc. Hughes hit half of his game-high eight three pointers in the first period, accounting for all but one of Twin Bridges’ points and a 13-12 lead over the Trojans.
Drummond’s Riley Allen was hot as a pistol as well in the opening stanza, scoring eight points from a variety of spots on the floor. But he collected his second foul midway into the period and had to sit down.
Hughes hit another three in the second to give the Twin Bridges a 35-27 halftime advantage. The two teams played close in the third, with the Falcons using a 21-11 fourth to extend their lead and secure the win.
Jonah Parke led Drummond with 20 points, while Riley Allen had 17.
