Drummond Trophy Committee looks toward state/standing trophies
DRUMMOND – The Trophy Committee at Drummond High School is moving into the next phase of its existence, turning its focus toward the remaining trophies for state level competition and those that are upright awards.
After lengthy discussion and options, the committee settled on displaying the state championship tournament awards on the south wall of Drummond Gymnasium’s foyer, just east of the window. The setup will include three state trophies that ate stand-up versions as well as a monitor that will display images and information from the state competitions.
The additional stand up trophies from postseason play that come from decades 1980 and prior that were issued by the MHSA will be displayed along the northern wall just west of the elevator and stair areas.
The committee completed restoring and replacing the 203 District and Division trophies earned by the school this winter, hanging them on the north wall of the gym’s foyer.
Part of that restoration will be digitizing the plaques and standing trophies for use later in an online display. Tim Allen of the Flint Creek Courier is performing that service free to the school.
The process began in the summer of 2017 when then superintendent Bryan Kott tried consolidating the trophies by removing the name and identifying portions of wall plaques and place them on a series of boards, eliminating the state-shaped pieces of wood in order to save space. It was his contention that the school did not have the wall space to accommodate the trophies in their original state.
But in October of 2017 word got out that Kott’s idea was being put into action and that the wooden wall plaques were being cut apart in the school’s wood shop class. Public outcry on social media and throughout the town stopped the process, but not before more than a hundred wall plaques and had been dismantled and destroyed.
