Adler wins third term; Recreational Use measure fails again

PHILIPSBURG – 1,794 voters turned out in Granite County Tuesday, making their voices heard on issues and candidates on midterm ballots.

In perhaps the most watched contest by county voters, incumbent Scott Adler won a third term over Drummond Mayor Gail Leeper, 950-791.

Moments after learning of the outcome, Adler stated, “I just want to say thank you to those that believe in me support and voted for me. Thank you Granite County.”

“I would like to say thank you to all who supported me,” Leeper offered after the results came in. “I am humbled by the love and kindness throughout the campaign. I will continue to be active in Granite County politics and to serve the people.”

Leeper will continue her service as Drummond’s mayor which has lasted 30 years thus far. She will be up for re-election in that office in 2024.

In a tight decision the Granite County Medical Center will receive its Mill Levy, receiving 854 votes in favor versus 807 votes against.

The measure to allow recreational sales of marijuana in Granite lost again, but by a smaller margin than it did in the June primary. The vote Tuesday night was 904-853, a 51 vote margin. In the June primary the measure failed by a count of 717-638 (79 difference).

The only other contested local race was for Justice of the Peace which was won by incumbent Debbie Fratzke 1,135-472 over Jason Aaron.

In Montana Legislature races, it was no surprise that Granite County voters leaned Republican. In the Senate District 39 race (R) Terry Vermeire received 1,189 votes to (D) Jesse Mullen’s 556, while in the House District 77 contest (R) John Fitzpatrick out-paced (D) Sarah Novak 1.223-533.

The Granite County votes will be added to the rest of their respective districts to determine a winner.

Uncontested races saw Scott Dunkerson, Blaine Bradshaw, Sarah Graham and Vicki Harding all retain their offices.
