BOYS: Granite beats young Trojan squad

DRUMMOND – It was a more experienced Prospector team that emerged the victor Saturday night, earning a 49-29 win over the Trojans in Drummond. The win runs Granite’s record to 5-1 on the year.

The two teams played even to start the game, with Granite gaining a one-point lead late and holding onto a 13-12 margin after one period. The Prospectors used a combination of presses that allowed them to create turnovers and create a pace that favored their style of play.

“It’s really game dependent,” said GHS Head Coach Dustin Keltner of his team’s pressure. “When we play a more experienced team we have to be more careful how we pressure.”

Junior Preston Metesh seemed to thrive on the defense, hawking the ball and creating havoc all over the court.

“Preston’s energy is contagious. He’s as high energy as anybody I’ve ever coached<” added Keltner.

“They had the fire and the intensity looked good,” DHS Head Coach Levi Parsons of his team’s first quarter play/ “The rotation on the defense was good and they were hustling after rebounds. Where we were struggling was that we weren’t getting anything out of the offense. Our offense was slow and we weren’t getting the shots we want out of it.”

That struggle became apparent in the middle two stanzas as Granite began to slowly take control and widen their margin. By game’s end, they had secured their fifth win of the season.

“We’re young and fundamentally we were really lacking. We struggled with turnovers and there’s some offense I’d like to work on that I’d like us to do,” observed Parsons.

Brian Ward again led Granite, scoring 17 points. Daniel Brabender was right behind him with 14, nine of which came in during the Prospectors’ third=quarter 17-7 run.

Colt Parsons led Drummond with seven points, while Wyatt Rigby added six.

Granite will take the next week to prepare for their road game at Ennis Jan. 10, while Drummond will use the same to prepare for their home game against Sheridan the same night.
