Drummond sinks invading Lady Pirates

DRUMMOND – The Lady Trojans wasted no time in dispatching the Lady Pirates of Victor, sweeping them in three sets to improve to 11-0 in District 13C play.

The victory guarantees Drummond the No. 1 seed in the upcoming postseason tournament, slated for October 27-28 at Valley Christian in Missoula. The Lady Trojans will get a first-round bye in the two-day event.

Tuesday night Drummond got down to business quickly. While Victor hung around early on in the opening set, it was due primarily to miscues by the Lady Trojans. But once those were corrected the locals cruised to an easy win in each of the three sets.

“We’re working on different pieces of the game over the next what, three weeks, to get ready for the tournament,” said DHS Head Coach Paige Fickler. “We’ve talked about things we want to focus on each day to complete all the pieces to the puzzle.”

When asked if the lack of consistent games might allow her team to get a little rusty heading into the playoffs, Fickler welcomed the break.

“I don’t think so,” continued Fickler. “You know last year we had that 10-day Covid stint (lay off) and I think that helped us almost more than anything.”

Senior Holly Hauptman led all attackers in the match with 13 kills, while junior Delaney Wagner was close behind with 11. Both girls also had two service aces. Jessie Struna dished out 32 assists in the victory while Liz Perry was a human wall at the net with four blocks.

Junior Lexi Nelson was named the Kiko’s Mexican Restaurant Player of the Game for her efforts and smart play. Nelson finished with six kills, a block and two aces. It is her second time receiving the honor.

The Lady Trojans are off until October 20th when they head to Darby to close out their district schedule. Two days later on the 22nd they’ll host St. Regis in a match in Drummond.
