Granite cagers easily handle Superior teams for second time

PHILIPSBURG – The Granite Boys and Girls basketball teams posted easy victories over the visiting Bobcat squads as they get ready for the District 13C Tournament that begins Feb. 17 in Frenchtown. Friday was also Senior Night for the Prospector and Lady Prospector elder classmen.

The Lady Prospectors started fast and finished strong as they bested the visiting Lady Bobcats by 18.

“I expect a good game,” said GHS Head Coach Brandon Piazolla of Saturday’s matchup against Twin Bridges. “Another good game before district and we’ll get to see where we’re at. We just need to come out and play hard. We’ve just got to finish the ‘bunnies’ (easy layups). If you don’t do that against a good team, that’s where you can get in trouble.”

Asha Comings led the Lady Trojans Friday night with 14 and Reece Pitcher was right behind her with 13.

Six different players scored for the Prospectors in the first quarter against Superior, providing a balanced attack the out-manned Bobcats were unable to stop.

Andrew Tallon scored 19 to lead the locals with Hayden Mason (15) and Cavan Babbit (11) also reaching double digits.

“This was a good one for the boys, it was nice to see them smile and have fun,” said first-year GHS Head Coach Mindy Avila. “Our main focus is playing Seeley for the tournament next week, so we worked on some things we needed to work on in this game to get ready for that game and we'll do the same thing tomorrow.

“In our eyes, starting Monday, that's a new season...we want to be ready.”
