Granite sweeps Wildcats in season finale, Earn No. 1 seed in district tournament
PHILIPSBURG – The Granite Girls Volleyball Team closed out its 2019 regular season with a three-game sweep of Harrison-Willow Creek, 27-25, 25-16, 25-22. The win leaves them atop the district standings as they head into postseason play next week.
It was these same Wildcats that beat Ennis earlier this week while five of the Lady Mustangs are absent due to a violation of team rules, so they were not to be taken lightly.
In Game 1 the visitors took a 17-16 lead and extended it to 21-17 before the Lady Prospectors started their comeback. Serenity O’Donnell served Granite back into the match with seven straight points and after an exchange of service, Haddie Tallon finished it off.
The Lady Prospectors controlled Game 2 from wire to wire, but found the going tougher in Game 3 as they tried to close out the match. Granite got out to an 11-5 lead only to have the Wildcats slowly close the gap until the score was knotted at 21-21. Harrison took a 22-21 advantage, but when Granite got the ball back senior Kayla Holland served out the next three points – one of which was an ace – for the win.
“It’s always good to honor the seniors and it’s even better to get them a win heading into districts,” said GHS Head Coach Jennifer Graham. “We’ve got four days of practice to get ready, so that’s nice.”
The Lady Prospectors will not take almost a week to prepare for the district tournament starting October 31 at Twin Bridges. They will enter as the No. 1 seed in the seven team event.
