Lady Trojans battle Lincoln to four-set victory

DRUMMOND – It took the Lady Lynx a while to get their rhythm Thursday night after the bus ride to Drummond, but once they did they pushed the Lady Trojans to four sets before falling 3-1.

Both teams are now 2-1 on the year, just one game behind district leader Granite at 3-0.

Drummond was in full control after two sets, winning the opener 25-14 and the second 25-13. But Lincoln found itself in the third set, pacing the locals all the way until pulling away for a 25-22 win.

The fourth set was the same as the two squads tied at 8-8. Neither was able to get away from the other until the score reached 26-26. It was then that Drummond strung together two straight points to secure the win.

In the second set senior setter Anna Kate Sawfer started finding hitters Kimber Parsons and Remington Cline, allowing the Lady Trojans to hit the accelerator on their offense.

“It starts off with the pass,” said Sawfer of the run. “Kimber and I just have that connection where if she knows the ball is coming to her, she can swing. It’s also that way with Remington.

“Our first goal is to shoot a one (middle). As soon as we saw that opening, we have passes that get them there and things just fell into place.”

As Lincoln surged in the third set, those opportunities started to move outside.

“We made some good passes,” said DHS Head Coach Sam Larson. “But then things got harder in the third and fourth sets. They started double blocking the middle and made a good adjustment and we didn’t adjust very well offensively to it.

“Lincoln came to play. If you look at their lineup, they have an excellent lineup and a lot of varsity experience. It wasn’t like we did a lot wrong, they just did a lot right.”

Cline led all hitters in the game with 14 kills, while Parsons added 11 kills, three blocks and six service aces. Sawfer had all 39 assists for Drummond. Brooke Hicks had 11 digs from the back row.

The Lady Trojans take Friday off before heading to the Corvalis Invitational Saturday.
