Lady Trojans best Class B Powell County in five sets
DRUMMOND – With the toughest parts of their District 13C schedule already behind them, the Drummond Lady Trojans were looking for a test as they tune up for the district tournament in two weeks.
The Powell County Lady Wardens were more than happy to comply.
The two teams battled in an epic five-set match that saw the host Lady Trojans rally to beat the visitors 3-2.
“I think is of great value,” said DHS Head Coach Paige Fickler of the victory. “I told the girls going into this it will be tough competition and when we get into the postseason more games are going to start to be like this as we move up the ladder in the postseason.
“We talked about not getting down. We know they’re going to have some good plays, but we are too. We just have to keep being the aggressor. We just have to swing more times than they do.”
The two squads played a tight first set, tied multiple times all the way up 25-25. But the Lady Wardens managed to collect a pair of points and claim the opener.
Drummond rallied its forces and took full control of the second set, winning 25-15 before edging Powell County in the third 26-24. But the Lady Wardens were not to be dismissed so easily, hammering their way to a 25-11 victory in set four to force the fifth.
At one point in the rubber match, the Lady Trojans trailed 10-5, but came back to knot the game at 12-12. It was then that Drummond’s multi-faceted attack came into bloom with Delaney Wagner serving. And when the locals led 14-13, it was Jesse Struna feeding Holly Hauptman for an explosive kill and match point.
Hauptman had 18 kills to lead Drummond, with Wagner chipping in 12. Liz Perry led in blocks with three, while Wagner was tops in aces with five.
For their play, Wagner and Perry were named co-winners of the Kiko’s Mexican Restaurant Player of the Game award.
Drummond has just one match next week, hosting the Lady Pirates of Victor Tuesday night.
