Lady Trojans cage Wildcats

DRUMMOND – The Lady Trojans got back to doing what they do best Friday night, playing sound, fundamental basketball and notching a win over the visiting Wildcats of Harrison-Willow Creek.

Drummond opened the game in a full court press that quickly took its toll on Harrison, running the score to 8-0 in the game’s first minute. The pressure continued, holding the Wildcats scoreless until there were just 37 seconds left in the period when Harrison’s Laure Cima finally tossed in a layup. She added a free throw and Ruth Crabtree got a bucket, but trailed Drummond 21-5 when the quarter buzzer sounded.

“There were a lot of things I liked,” said DHS Head Coach Nate Bignell following his team’s ninth win of the season. “The girls hustle, they never want to quit. They want to go all the time.”

Many of Drummond’s point throughout the game were the result of good passes that found players streaking to the basket, many of which were of the backdoor variety. Bignell noted that he and his girls had been covering that in recent practices.

“That’s one thing we’ve been working on is seeing the floor and hitting that open man. There were a lot of open holes in there and that back cut was there.”

The hosts were most inhospitable on defense all night, maintaining a tight grip on the Wildcats while creating fast break opportunities on their end of the floor.

Drummond will take to the road Saturday to play Clark Fork.

A fast and fundamentally sound Wildcat team took a slim lead after one period, but continued to extend it until they claimed victory by game’s end.

“There were some good things. We dug ourselves a little bit of a hole, but there were some good moments,” said DHS Head Coach Levi Parsons. “We got a little tired, but we tried some things defensively and they did a good job in places. They played well.

But Harrison is a very good team.”

Caleb Parke was the Trojan’s leading scorer with 11 points with no other teammates finding their way into double figures.
