Lady Trojans end season with divisional loss to Superior
BUTTE – The Drummond Lady Trojans were outgunned in the second period by Superior on their way to a season-ending loss 51-34 in the quarterfinals of the Class C Western Division Basketball Tournament at the Maroon Activities Center (MAC) Friday afternoon.
Trailing 9-8 after one quarter, the Lady Bobcats ran wild in the second using a press to create turnovers and score in transition. When they did set up, Izzy Pereira was raining down shots from beyond the three-point arc. She scored eight in the period on her way to 25 for the game that included five three-pointers.
The Lady Trojans bounced back in the third, outscoring Superior 13-9, but the Lady Bobcats sprang back to the life in the fourth and put the game out of reach.
“Yeah, I’m proud of these girls,” said a reflective DHS Head Coach Nate Bignell after the defeat. “Every step of the way … they fought every moment and I enjoy coaching them.
Drummond finishes the year 18-5 and graduating just one senior, Liz Perry who scored a team-high 12 points i9n her final outing.
When questioned about bringing this team together and when he realized it, Bignell responded with, “Early in the season with their practices, they just gelled well together. They did a lot of right things. They’re fun to watch and they’re gonna be good coming down the road.”
And when asked if he’d be back to guide that team next year, Bignell’s reply was, “We’ll see if they take me.”
