Lady Trojans grounded by Blackhawks

DRUMMOND – The Seeley Swan Blackhawks got a solid run for their money Thursday night, but emerged from Drummond with a 3-0 win over the Lady Trojans, 25-16, 25-23, 25-15.

“The girls played well, but they just need to play together with more confidence,” said DHS Head Coach Brooks Phillips. “That will come with time.”

Time is something that Drummond has the luxury of for the moment, as this young team with just one senior (Riley Hilmo) is learning to gel under Phillips in her first year at the helm.

In each of the first two games, Seeley grabbed a small lead early, only to have Drummond rally and push them the entire way. Game two saw the Lady Trojans take the lead 22-20 and force a Seeley timeout. Drummond pressed it to 23-21 before the Blackhawks took another break. Whatever Seeley coach Tammy Lewis said in that second timeout made the difference as her girls rallied to win the game and eventually the match.

Gracie Weaver had a good night on defense with 10 digs, just five behind team leader Hannah Bradshaw with 15. Rylee Hilmo had nine assists, Deana Parke had three service aces and Holly Hauptman led in kills with four. Sydney Phillips had three kills and three blocks while Bradshaw also chipped in three kills.

The Lady Trojans will get a day to regroup from this non-conference matchup before facing Twin Bridges at home Saturday.
