Sheriff identifies law enforcement officers involved in fatal shooting

PHILLIPSBURG - The Granite County Sheriff's Department released the names of the officer and game warden involved in a shooting that resulted in the death of a suspect at Sunshine Station Thursday, April 16.

The official media release reads as follows:

Thaddeus Smith is identified as the Granite County Deputy involved in the fatal shooting April 16th in Philipsburg. Fish and Game Warden Terry Althaus is the Warden that was providing assistance to the Sheriff’s Office at the time of the call.

Administrative staff have reviewed the video evidence in this case and Sheriff’s Office policy and Montana law appear to have been followed. The Montana Department of Criminal Investigation continues to investigate the matter.
