Titans blast Trojans for second win of 2021
DRUMMOND – Despite the fact that this game looked like a blow out on paper, the Troy Trojans and Flint Creek Titans strapped up their gear Friday night and took to the field. And just as predicted, the Titans rolled over the visitors 84-6 to claim their second win of the young 8-man football season.
It was a game that saw Flint Creek mount its most potent offensive attack in its ninth season of existence, besting an 82-0 blowout of Seeley Swan from 2018. That Seeley win still stands as the largest margin of victory in the local’s history.
And in their last four years of play, the Titans have won all four games by a combined score of 278-32.
Friday night’s installment saw Flint Creek hold Troy scoreless on their opening possession and then go right into the end zone on an Andrew Tallon two-yard scoring run. Chase Goldade added the two-point conversion and the route was on.
Just 90 second later the defense got on the scoreboard when linemen Cordell Langton and Leyton Wagner teamed up to sack Trojan quarterback Paxton Fisher for a safety. It would prove to be the first of four safeties on the day for the Titans, three of which involved Langton.
Flint Creek started the running clock before the opening period’s end with Tallon throwing three touchdown passes (two to Avery Metesh for 39 and 10 yards and one to Wagner for 10 yds) and Tyler Burden rumbling in for a score on the ground from two yards out. In all they scored 44 first-quarter points and never looked back.
“We’ll take all the W’s we can get, no matter how they come,” said Titan Head Coach Jason Ostler after the game. When asked about what his team focused on as the game started get out of hand, he added, “We just want them to keep their intensity and their line assignments. Just because someone else isn’t playing well doesn’t mean you can give up on your job.”
Ostler also noted the play of transfer students Hayden Mason and Goldade, who have “Stepped up and done a great job for us after just getting here.”
The second quarter looked like the first, only with a running clock. On the Trojans’ second play from scrimmage, Fisher fumbled and Colt Parsons scooped up the ball and ran it in for a 33-yard score. Goldade took over at quarterback and scored a pair of rushing touchdowns to give the locals a 70-0 halftime lead.
As soon as the break was over and the seniors recognized, Metesh took the opening kickoff and ran it back for a touchdown. It marked the second time in as many weeks that he had accomplished the feat.
Langton’s final safety of the day and a Goldade to Trey Phillips TD pass closed out the scoring for Flint Creek in the third period.
Troy finally got past midfield with just under five minutes to play when Fisher hit Ben Starks with a 47 yard pass that put them on the Titan 18. From there Fisher lobbed up a floater to receiver Kempton Sloan who hauled it in for the score with 4:23 to play.
Flint Creek will now take to the road for the first time this year, making the two-hour trek to Plains to try and tame the Horsemen Saturday, September 11 at 1 p.m.
