Trojans outlast Blackhawks in double overtime
DRUMMOND – It was as big a win as the Trojans have had this year, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
Drummond beat Seeley Swan 84-81 in double overtime Tuesday night, lifting its record to 4-2 in District 13C play. The Blackhawks fall to 5-3 and lost the tie breaker to the Trojans should it matter come tournament time.
The Trojans opened the game playing well, opening a small 17-13 lead after one quarter and extending it to 31-22 at halftime.
But the Blackhawks are not ranked among the top teams in D13C for nothing. They outscored their hosts 43-34 in the second half to knot the game at 65-65 and force overtime.
Drummond looked like it had the victory after that first four-minute period, but Derrick Brevold hit a three-pointer as time expired to send the game into a second overtime period.
“What we tried to do is keep it slow and get the ball in the hands of Mike James and some of our other key players that cane make smart decisions with the ball,” explained DHS Head Coach Levi Parsons. “Dalton Suthers … that was probably his best game of the year. He stepped up big time in overtime.
“Isaac (Loessberg), you look at the scorebook and he had three points, not a lot of points for us. But in that overtime alone he played his defensive spot well and he got some rebounds when we really needed it. He played really tough for us down the stretch.”
Suthers and Kadin Graveley scored six points each during the extra periods, combining for 12 of Drummond’s 19 points. Suthers finished with a season-high 14 points and logged a block on Seeley’s final three-point try to secure the win.
“We did a lot of good things. We missed a few shots, but they gutted it out,” Parsons added. “It was great see that after on our home court after what happened here vs P-Burg. It was great to see them get banged around in that game. But still gut it out in this one to get the win.”
Michael James led all scorers in the game with 32 points for the Trojanns, a season-best. Graveley scored 20 that included four first-half three points from well beyond the arc.
The Blackhawks were carried by the scoring of Brevold with 28 and Blake Irwin, who had 26 points on six three-point baskets.
Drummond heads back out on the road Thursday to play the back end of a home-and-home with the Wardens of Powell County.

“For whatever reason, we came out first quarter really slack,” said DHS Head Coach Levi Parsons, “and we dug ourselves a big hole. We just didn’t have any energy. I saw our girls for that whole overtime (Boys double OT) jumpin’ up and down and cheering them on and I think they spent a lot of energy. I think the smartest for me would have been to send them to the locker room. But I didn’t. I know its exciting for them and they want to be part of it, but I think that hurt us.”
Seeley started the girls game with a 16-5 run that set tone and the lead for the remainder of the game. Drummond outscored the visitors in each of the subsequent three quarters, but it wasn’t enough to earn the win.
Kimber Parsons continued to pace the Lady Trojans with 24 points.
