Trojans scuttle visiting Pirates in clean sweep

DRUMMOND – The Victor Pirate basketball teams sailed into Drummond Saturday looking for a victory. What they found were fleet of Trojan warships that promptly sank all hope.

The visiting Pirates held a brief lead right after the game’s opening tipoff, but it quickly dissipated under a stifling defense and efficient offense executed by the host Trojans.

“They’ve (Victor) being playing everybody they’ve played so fairly tough,” said DHS Head Coach Levi Parsons. “Darby barley snuck by them. They hung with Seeley a long time. They gave Valley Christian a run for their money.

“I’m feeling very confident in where we are right now. I feel like we’re the top team in our district. I think if we lose to anybody in our district right now it wouldn’t be that they beat us, it’s that we beat ourselves. That might sound a little bit arrogant, but I’ve got a solid group of 10 players that about any one of those 10 could start on any other team in our district.”

When the Pirates’ Carson Varner gathered up an offensive rebound and scored at the 5:38 mark, little did anyone know that it would be another 17:38 – at the 4:00 minute mark of the third quarter – before the visitors would see another ball go through the net at their end of the floor.

Reese Hilmo, one of four Trojan players honored during Senior Night festivities earlier that afternoon, answered with a long three-pointer that put Drummond ahead for good. Hilmo went on to hit two more long-range bombs on his way to a 12-point night.

The Trojans also blanked Victor for the entire fourth period as well.

Every player but one that entered the game for the locals found their way into the scorebook, with Colt Parsons leading the way with 13. Cooper Bradshaw and Caleb Parke each added 12 in the win.

Lady Trojan Liz Perry had a career night against the Pirates scoring 22 points on 11 rebounds, half of which came on offense.

“She gets better every single day,” said DHS Head Coach Nate Bignell. “Every time she steps out on that court she gets better. She’s very coachable and did very well today rebounding and getting to that hole.”

The two squads played a tight first period before Drummond took control with a 16-8 second stanza run. They repeated the feat in the second half, using a 13-6 margin in the fourth to secure the win.

When asked about the progress of his team, Bignell responded, “We’ve still got some things to fix, but we’re getting better every game. We’ve got a long ways to go to get where we want to be, but showing improvement like this is a big positive.”

Besides Perry, Hauptman logged a double-double as well with 10 points and 10 rebounds and adding seven assists.

Drummond took much better care of the ball than Victor, committing just 16 turnovers to the visitor’s 31.
