Trojans ‘take charge’ to beat Charlo in Consolation clash
BUTTE – Scott Parke had three and Ben Bradshaw one take charge plays against Charlo Friday to help Drummond reach the Consolation semifinals with a 59-46 win at the Maroon Activities Center (MAC) in Butte.
The Trojans (18-5) edged out to a two-point lead 6-4 after one period and used a larger run to widen their margin in the second.
But as the third period loomed, Drummond knew a squall was coming.
“I think it’s truly just that they get real comfortable with a lead and believe they can take plays off,” said DHS Head Coach Levi Parsons, who notched just his second divisional win as a head coach Friday night. “Every time we do it, it bites us in the butt. We talked about it halftime and called timeouts to talk about it. But once you fall into that little slump, it’s really hard to climb back out of it.”
To attack the issue, Parsons indicated that the team’s strategy was to attack the big men for Charlo that were in foul trouble. They didn’t get them out until the very end, but being near the edge made their play somewhat more timid as the Viking post people didn’t wasn’t to hit the bench.
The point of attack: junior Trey Phillips. The Trojan big man finished with 23 points and nine rebounds, including 10 points during Drummond’s 16-8 second quarter run top put them up 22-12 at halftime. And as the Vikings tried to make a fourth-quarter run, Phillips scored six more, collected three rebounds and shut down the middle on defense.
Along with Phillips, senior Colt Parsons scored 15 for the victors. Wesley Anderson was the top scorer for the Vikings with 13.
With the win the Trojans advance to the Consolation semifinals where they will face Lone Peak in an elimination game. The winner will face the survivor of the Darby-West Yellowstone game, also Saturday morning but played at the MAC.
Drummond’s contest will be at 9:30 a.m. at the Butte Civic Center. It is unknown if they have an NFHS camera in that facility or if a manual unit will be dispatched there. The Flint Creek Courier will provide halftime and postgame updates on the Drummond-Lone Peak contest.
